Mark Robson and the Lyris Quartet performing my piano quintet, ISLAND & EXILE (2012), at The HEAR NOW Festival 2013

ISLAND & EXILE is a programmatic piece based on 8 months in 1932-33, which the German-Jewish philosopher, Walter Benjamin, spent on the Spanish island of Ibiza. While on Ibiza, Benjamin was writing about his childhood. He came to the understanding that certain events he lived as a child had 'echoed' through his entire life. ISLAND & EXILE takes the FFFF chord at the beginning of the 2nd movement as the 'event'. Most of the other elements, sequences, figures, and gestures in the piece can be construed in one way or another as 'echoes' of this originating event. Due to Benjamin's concept of time as non-linear, some of the 'echoes' sound in the 1st movement, i.e., before the sounding of the originating chord. Musically, ISLAND & EXILE is based on one succession of fixed intervals which vary according to whether a musical line is ascending or descending.

By the time Benjamin left the island in 1933 it was clear to him that he would never again be able to return to Germany.
